Coldplay ~ Viva la Vida

I’ve been listening to Coldplay for a while. I have their first album “Parachutes” and while it was ok, I was left wanting... well, more.

Thanks to youtube I’ve been listening to their followup albums and I think their latest one is rather good.

This is probably the most popular song on Coldplay’s latest album “Viva la Vida”.

Oh Holy Night ~ Celtic Woman / Chloe Agnew

‘tis that season again and this is probably my favourite Christmas Carol. I think it’s hard to beat Bing Crosby singing Oh Holy Night, but these young celtic lasses have taken the title.

Jesus, He knows me ~ Genesis

Don't worry, Be happy ~ Bobby McFerrin

What more is there to say?

Welcome back to the 80’s.

Run to paradise ~ Choirboys

Ah yes, this takes me back. I currently have this song playing on my iPod Nano (2nd Gen).
Enjoy!

Georgia on my mind ~ Ray Charles

One of my favourites from Ray Charles, of which I have a few, is Georgia on my mind.
The film “Ray” is also an interesting chronicle of his life. Watch it if you get the chance.

Remembrance Day ~ Australia

poppiesToday is Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) in Australia.

Originally called “Armistice Day”, today commemorates the end of hostilities for the Great War (WWI), the “war to end all wars”. Armistice Day is observed by the Allies as a way of remembering those who died, especially soldiers with 'no known grave’.
The signing of the armistice occurred on 11 November 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Rolf Harris ~ Two Little Boys

We should remember them.

Happy Birthday ~ Joni Mitchell

Today is the birthday of Joni Mitchell. She turns 65 young.

Arguably one of the greatest songwriters ever, Joni is probably best known for her work in the 60’s and 70’s.

I have a number of her albums and even listening to her today on the radio, her music is refreshing against the prose of today.

Happy birthday Joni.

May it be ~ Enya

Enya has a hauntingly beautiful voice.

She has produced a lot of music but I thought I’d put up this one as I’m also a LOTR’s fan.

If you’re wondering what she is saying, it is Quenya.

Mornie utúlie (darkness has come)
Mornie alantie (darkness has fallen)

Fading like a flower ~ Roxette

I’m a fan of Roxette.

There, I’ve said it.

I have all the english albums.

Marie Fredriksson has a powerful voice that can be soft and subtle one moment and knocking you on your a** the next.

“Fading like a flower” is one of my favourite songs from Roxette. It first showed up on the “Joyride” album back in 1991. I can’t believe it’s been THAT long.

It’s also appeared on a couple of compilation albums since then.

Marie was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2002. She has beaten the cancer but apparently still suffers from some brain damage that it caused. She has spoken about new albums in interviews and here’s hoping she has the strength to make another Roxette album.

Feeling Good ~ Nina Simone

Ah, Nina Simone. What more is there to say? If you’ve not heard of her or listened to any of her music then give it a try. But, it’s not for all occasions. She’s very good at ad-lib’ing and some of her best work is when she’s only accompanied by a piano.

One and only ~ Chesney Hawkes

I found an old compilation tape from way back in the early 90’s ...’91 I think. “Bash out the Hits” or something like that.

I couldn’t remember who sang this and I don’t have the tape cover any longer. So a bit of googling and it turns out to be Chesney Hawkes. Unfortunately I think it was the best song on the entire tape, but I haven’t listened to it right the way through yet. I didn’t have the stomach for that at the time.

So without further ado... Chesney Hawkes, One and only.

My love is like a red, red rose ~ Isobel Cooper

Ok, this is an odd choice. I was watching “The Journey to the centre of the earth” ..the original. One of the songs sung in the film is an old Scottish tune called “My love is like a red, red rose”. Originally written by Robert Burns it has been sung by a lot of people over the centuries.

Well, my heritage is Scottish so that’s a good enough excuse to put it up. However, while looking on YouTube for a version I came across Isobel Cooper (Izzy) singing it.

If you’ve never heard of Izzy or her music I have also included another of her works. What a voice!

and also:

Una Furtiva Lagrima

When tomorrow comes ~ Eurythmics

The 80’s

...and Annie Lennox!

This has prompted me to go hunting for my tapes. Remember those?
I might have to replace them with the CD versions.

Sorry. I couldn’t embed this one. Sony! ..need I say more?

On the road again ~ Willie Nelson

This is an odd choice, but it was going through my head every morning while I was on my Longreach trip. I almost missed it when I woke up this morning and I wasn’t mentally humming it... no more travels (sigh).

Holy Grail ~ Hunters and Collectors

I generally like the work of Hunters and Collectors. This is one of my more favorite tracks.

Holy Grail.

Wild Dances ~ Ruslana

Along the same lines as BotTF comes “Song of the Time Frame”, or SotTF.

Song of the Time Frame is a category I will update with each song that comes to mind. I will attempt to find the original video clip, or whatever else YouTube has on offer, so you can watch as well as listen - a true multimedia experience. My music tastes are wide and varied, but SotTF will also include stuff I just happen across as I dawdle along.

Like BotTF, SotTF is so-called because I don’t want to be held to any specific numbers of songs or to any specific period of time. I’ll post them when I’m good and ready. I can’t promise you’ll like everything I’ll post under this category, so lets just say it’s broadening your mind. Opening your eyes and ears to something you may not normally listen to. If only for a moment.

So without further ado here is the very first SotTF entry...

Ruslana ~ “Wild Dances”.

Yes, lets look past the lyrics and the repetitive nature, but how can you look past HER?

Ruslana won the 2004 Eurovision song contest with this song. How that happened I’m not sure... but I would have voted for her.

Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye

I found this today while browsing YouTube.

Danny Kaye could well be one of the best entertainers of the past century. If you’ve never seen any of his material then go hunt some down and have a squiz.

Hallelujah ~ K. D. Lang

I think this is the best version of "Hallelujah" I've heard.

Have a listen.

What do you think?

Roxette!

roxette
I walked into the WOW Superstore this afternoon and lo and behold they had video clips of Roxette playing on their TV screens. Being a Roxette fan I thought, "I gotta have that" so picked up the DVD which has the entire collection, 1987 - 2001, for under $10. BARGAIN!
So I'm typing this listening to the strains of Marie singing "Dressed for Success". Ah, those were the days, big hair and even bigger shoulder pads.
Now I guess you thought that Roxette had fallen off the face of the Earth a long time ago. Well, actually they're still producing music, and rather good stuff if you ask me. But then I'm biased. For the latest goss you can visit the Daily Roxette...or just Google them.

roomservice
Room Service in 2001 was their last new material album, since then there has been a number of "Greatest Hits" type CD's. This albums first track "Real Sugar" is a typical 80's Roxette sound. The final track "My world, my love, my life" is probably the best song on the album. Per and Marie have both had successful solo careers staying mainly in Europe

I have always liked Marie's voice, powerful yet subtle, and I think it's getting better as she gets ...how do you say older without offending a woman?
Here's hoping they continue on for a while yet.

Pearls of Passion - 1986
Look Sharp - 1988
Joyride - 1991
Tourism - 1992
Crash Boom Bang - 1994
Don't bore us, get us to the Chorus - 1995
Have a nice Day - 1999
Tourism - 2001

There are other remixes and best of's.

I also picked up a few Led Zepplin's and Pink Floyd's as I slowly replace tapes with CD's
